NOT YOUR USUAL SUSPECTS

A group blog featuring an international array of killer mystery, suspense, and romantic suspense writers. With premises and story lines different from your run-of-the-mill whodunits, we tend to write outside the box. We blog several times a week on all topics relating to romantic suspense and mystery, our writing, and our readers. We welcome all comments and often have guest bloggers. All our authors can be contacted separately, too, using their own social media links.

We find our genre delightfully, dangerously, and deliciously exciting - join us here, if you do too!

NOTE: the blog is currently dormant but please enjoy the posts we're keeping online.

Meanwhile, Somewhere Else in the World

Just one moment. Before I follow Rita's lead and take us on another mystery trip, I want to pause for this:

Cue angels singing....doughnuts. Spanish doughnuts. Now I remember that machine! Mmmmmm. Thank you, Rita.

OK. Enough of that. We need to get a move on, Mystery Fans.

Time to board the ship of the imagination.
This is a place I know you've heard of...but I bet it doesn't look anything like what you'd expect.

(Remember how I said I make my family wait while I compose my shots? Yeah. That happened here.)

This is a place that draws mystery readers. It's creepy and sad and fascinating and horrible.

(I shrunk that one so you couldn't read the street sign. No cheat codes, people. Seriously.)

Guesses?

I think this is in London. I have CRS (can't remember sh*t) and can't be sure.

Fooy! Meant to ask why is it creepy and sad?

Great guess!

Any one else before I say more? ;)

Hmm, tricky one. I'm guessing London too. Whitechapel?

J Wachowski said...

Nice, Shirley, Whitechapel indeed! That is St. Boltoph's church aka Aldgate Church.

Do the names Elizabeth, Annie, Catherine, Mary Jane and Mary Ann rings any bells?

London. Part of the old Roman Wall on London Wall, near the Barbican and St Giles Cripplegate. I think!

Ding, ding, Helena, you are correct! That's London's old roman wall that separated West from East, fresh air from stinky....and rich from poor.
The entrance to the East End, site of the infamous....

Oh, this is such fun! Never been to London, but I want to one day...

So the reason it's creepy & sad, Rita, is that this is the neighborhood the Jack the Ripper murdered: Catherine, Annie, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Mary Jane.

I took a walking tour there a couple of years ago and the emphasis was on the story of each woman's life, who she was and how circumstances had brought her that sad, desperate place.

It was really powerful to realize how much we know about the killer and how little we know about the women....

But that's always the way, isn't it. We know all about the serial killers and mass murderers, and almost nothing about their victims.

J Wachowski said...

Yes, Marcelle, you're so right. And when I heard the details of each woman's story, I was fascinated.
It was a powerful exercise in POV shift.
