I am an ex librarian and spent many frustrating hours talking to my users about copyright theft, which they thought was akin to speeding but which does, like e-thieving, take money out of the authors' pockets. A recent survey revealed that most authors make less than £600 pa. And yet these wastes of space think we are all millionaires. And, I agree with Rita, there is so little we can do to stop it.April Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09323616899009501244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7545210782126483136.post-23024455223826399482014-05-07T10:38:32.224-07:002014-05-07T10:38:32.224-07:00Whew. It's not right.
And...I'm not going to get worked up about it.
Right now, piracy is CDB of writing for an online audience. It just is.
Putting a ton of emotional energy into hunting pirates isn't helpful to my work-brain. Just makes me cranky.
There is an old custom of spilling (wasting) some of your wine "for the gods." That's how I think of it. And now lawman? Frustrating that it is so hard to deal with but my husband's identity was stolen a few years ago and though though I finally managed to put a stop to it and though found out the thieves address by someone verbally slipping no one in law enforcement would go after him. Is any action I take going to prevent a &%@* creep in Russia, Poland, Romania, or China from closing up shop on a site and opening another the next day? IMO no. The internet is lawless. Even if there were laws to protect us these scum bags would ignore them. I’m hearing that even reporting to the money outlets (CC companies etc) is no longer working. People using these sites may not pay for books but they will pay. Karma is a mean bitch.
I do feel those guilty of out and out plagiarism can and should be stopped. I believe we’ll see a lot more of this in the future.
Ritahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09054306874904898496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7545210782126483136.post-16062203641366537922014-05-07T05:42:02.896-07:002014-05-07T05:42:02.896-07:00When I wrote for Desert Breeze Publishing (mostly ...When I wrote for Desert Breeze Publishing (mostly ebooks) we'd find these sites with the entire catalog of DBP up and my fellow authors would go crazy. At first I did too. They burn up the DBP author board (private) and we'd spend hours and hours writing letters, filling out Google piracy forms.

The anger level was so high, it also got out to public discourse. IMO, this just tells readers who like to get things for free where to go to get them. I got out of the discussion and stopped writing letters and filling out forms. I'm concentrating on writing and on the readers who will pay for what they read.Nike Chillemihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13840406107033413597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7545210782126483136.post-46838991645196248322014-05-07T05:27:22.908-07:002014-05-07T05:27:22.908-07:00Everything you've said is true and frustrating...Everything you've said is true and frustrating.
